Purpose of Education
Based on educational philosophy of PNU – Truth, Service, Freedom – we seek to cultivate passionate, competent biomedical scientists who will contribute to the local and global society by preventing and curing diseases. In addition, we plan to train professionals capable of translational research and industrialization with BK21PLUS Project group.
Admission Criteria
Department of medical sciences will accept students who plan to pursue fundamental research, regardless of medical licenses. Most of students will be assigned to professors from basic medical science laboratories. However, few may be assigned to professors of clinical medicine who are highly talented researchers. Only full-time students may apply, and all students may receive BK21 PLUS scholarships and/or PNU scholarships.
Academics & Research
Our department has been founded on March, 2006, located within the medical school building. We provided best environment for research for students and professors, as our common laboratories are equipped with brand-new instrument and newly founded Biomedical Science Library. Professors of biomedical sciences have been successfully selected to BK 21PLUS Project and received many research funds from local and national government. In addition, we provided many programs such as industry-cooperation, overseas research, and clinical medicine collaboration.
Major research field in our department are as follows: biomolecular engineering and genetics, neuroscience, microbiology and immunology, pharmacology, preventive medicine, physiology and medical engineering. Further, we also have many research institutes and centers within the campus which allow researchers to easily communicate their knowledge. Our common lab is equipped with many novel instrument: confocal microscope, real time PCR, high speed cell sorter, flow cytometry, transmission electron microscope, laser doppler imaging system, image analyzer for DNA/RNA/protein, FX-4000T flexcell tension plus system and more. With the assistance of skillful researchers and professors, we contribute our nation’s growth of biomedical sciences.

Greetings
Department of Convergence Medical Sciences, formerly founded as the department of medical sciences in 2006, has been renewed in 2020 to cultivate professional scientists who are capable of utilizing convergent medicine to diverse fields. Based on four-staged BK21 Project, we have laid foundations for raising competent researchers and will provide our uttermost care for them to solely focus on academics and research.
To meet the demands of 4th industrial revolution, we have created several convergent courses such as bioinformatics, biomedical nanosciences, and big data management to further promote interdisciplinary research capabilities. In addition to researching abilities, we will also help our students to extend their horizons by helping them to find jobs and pursue entrepreneurship.
Aspiring to be the leaders of convergent medicine, our professors and students are working harder than ever. Our effort will be the guiding light for our nation’s future.
Thank you.

Translational Researchers
We seek to develop researchers who can translate their accomplishments from laboratories into clinical practices, and find solutions for unmet medical needs from clinical fields.
Industrializing researchers
We seek to develop researchers who will invent novel biomedical technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic disease and be able to industrialize such technologies.
Convergent Researchers
For the industrialization of medical healthcare, convergence between many diverse fields is required. Thus, we need to develop researchers who can perform such convergent research.
International-level researchers
By developing researchers who can perform international-level translational research, we seek for the globalization of our biomedical technology.
